Nitration is a heat treatment process that allows nitrogen to penetrate the metal surface to create a hardened surface. Therefore, the processes are similar to case hardening but are carried out at a lower temperature. The advantage of nitration compared to carburizing is primarily less distortion behavior and still provides high surface strength and ductile core. However, it will take considerable time to reach the same surface depth as carburizing, as the process is carried out at a lower temperature. Nitration can also increase the corrosion resistance of a component. Common applications are small gears, crankshafts and wearing parts.
