Micro alloyed steels (HSLA = high strength low alloyed) are members of the classic high strength steel product family. These steels show a wide range of yield strength levels and cover the upper strength range of classic high strength steels. These steels are characterized by high yield-tensile strength, good cold formability and good weldability. Niobium, Titanium and Vanadium are used as alloying elements to adjust hardness in these steels. These elements can be added individually or together and allow high hardness through grain refining and precipitation hardening. Carbon addition and solid solution hardening can also be used to increase hardness. As a result of the wide strength range, micro alloy steels offer the most ideal selection of materials to suit part requirements and are therefore well suited for the fabrication of structural and chassis parts.
